The music program of Coimbra 2003 paid tribute to several musical figures who were born in Coimbra or worked in this city most of their lives. Carlos Paredes is one such personality. The music of Carlos Paredes, the great master of the Portuguese Guitar, inspired the Bernardo Moreira Sexteto. "Ao Paredes Confesso - Homenagem a Carlos Paredes" was the title of a concert where the music of this modern troubadour called the changes.
Works by composers Manuel Faria, José Firmino and others were featured in a concert called "Tribute to Modern Coimbra Composers". The pieces were played by the Orquestra Filarmonia das Beiras conducted by António Saiote.
Coimbra 2003, commemorated the World's Day of Music in an entirely different fashion this year. We organized a concert totally dedicated to the Coimbra musician. I called it "The Coimbra Musicians World's Day"! A big burden on Coimbra musicians I must admit but it was their turn...
Carlos Seixas, the renowned Portuguese composer of the Barroque period was also the key figure of very a special event about which you can read more here. Another hommage to this composer featured organist João Vaz playing some of his works for the organ. It took place at the beautiful setting of the Chapel of the Coimbra University's Library.
