Music, computers and science get together in Coimbra
I challenged Portuguese composer Miguel Azguime to organize a special edition of the Musica Viva Festival (now commemorating its 9th edition) for this Coimbra, Capital Nacional da Cultura 2003. We wanted it to responded to the Coimbra2003's emphasis on the bonds between science and art. The Musica Viva Festival 2003 program thus included an important "International Seminar on Music and Science" which analyzed the boundaries between new music and science. A distinguished group of well known researchers and composers was present.
The program also included a vast array of new pieces featuring the latest electronics and computer based technology, workshops and the highly successful visits to the schools of Coimbra by some of the EA participating composers.
Musica Viva is at the moment the only festival in Portugal totally dedicated to the new music made around the world. It was as many people readily acknowledged it, one of the most successful ever produced. We are proud to have shared this success with Musica Viva.
